Demand response is a tool to balance consumption and production in an electric grid when the frequency is fluctuating. It can also be used to smoothen demand peaks in buildings, thus providing savings for energy costs. Additionally, as demand response becomes more common, it benefits society, when wind and solar power can be integrated more cost-effectively to the existing grid. Traditional way of responding to supply deficit caused by renewable energy is to produce electricity with expensive back-up power plants, such as gas turbines.
