Background: Independent Mental Health Advocacy (IMHA) is a non-legal representational form of advocacy run by Victorian Legal Aid (VLA) that promotes the rights of consumers subject to or at risk of compulsory treatment. This paper details findings of an evaluation of IMHA conducted by RMITs Social and Global Studies Centre. Methods: The evaluation was co-produced with consumers. A mix-method approach was employed with a combination of qualitative interviews and focus group discussion with key stakeholders and survey-based data. Results: Three emergent themes were identified: stakeholders value IMHAs advocacy; stakeholders have a low awareness of advocacy; and, stake holders do not understand IMHA.
