Remarkable advances have occurred recently in our ability to detect genetic polymorphisms contributing to susceptibility to complex human disease. The technology for detecting and scoring single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) has undergone rapid development, yielding extensive catalogues of these polymorphisms across the genome.
