Context/Aims: Family and friends caring for a patient in the terminal phase of a disease may need support. Despite evaluation it is unclear what types of interventions to provide support are more appropriate. The variety of interventions trialled and how each trial has assessed benefit makes interpretation difficult. We have used a new methodological approach to categorising data in a systematic review of randomised controlled trials on the effectiveness of supportive interventions for family carers of patients in the terminal phase of a disease.
