Die US-amerikanische Schriftstellerin Shirley Jackson (1916-1965) gilt aufgrund ihres eigenen Stils als eine Ikone der Horrorliteratur. Bekannt wurde sie auch durch ihre autobiographischen Romanen „Life Among the Savages“ (1953) und „Raising Demons“ (1957), in denen sie mit viel Humor ihr Leben als Ehefrau und Mutter von vier Kindern in North Bennington beschreibt. Diese Darstellung der kleinen Triumphe und großen Probleme des Elternseins wurde von Kritikern gefeiert.
