Positron Emission Tomography (PET), a modality of functional medical imaging, has been developing for about 15 years. In oncology, 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET has become a main tool for cancer diagnosis. However, FDG cannot detect and monitor all types of cancer. Thus research is continuing, exploring new applications for other documented tracers and developing more specific and targeted tracers than analogues of metabolic substrates.
