Territoires et exploitations équines en France

However, the activity related to these animals is far from being negligible, because of the number of farms involved and the fodder areas they maintain. This activity can be the principal activity of the farm or just bring some additional income in areas with low agricultural activity.We carried out a typology of French territories based the horse activities existing in the farms, on a cantonal basis for a more precise analysis of the spatial dispersion of these activities. This typology shows that despite the relatively small share of livestock that the horses represent, their associated activities make the horse farms major actors in several territories, mostly peri-urban, in mountains but also in some crop areas.Les équidés représentent en France une faible part des herbivores, mais ils sont présents dans 14 % des exploitations agricoles et entretiennent d'importantes surfaces fourragères. Pour appréhender spatialement des activités, les auteurs ont réalisé une typologie des cantons en fonctions des activités équines présentes dans les exploitations. Cette typologie montre, malgré la faible présence du cheptel équin, les activités qui leu sont liées font des exploitations concernées des acteurs importants de certains territoires, périurbains, montagnards, mais également en zones de cultures
