Auxotyping and antibiotic susceptibility of Southern African isolates of neisseria gonorrhoeae

A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Medicine , University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, for the degree in Master of Science in Medicine. 1988Three hundred and thirteen isolates of neisseris gonorrhoeae were characterised into 26 different auxotypes. The prototrophs accounted for 53% of isolates, followed by the proline requiring (PRO) strains which accounted for 19% of isolates.. Ninety percent of the strains fell within the eight most common auxotypes. No strain requiring arginine, hypoxanthine and uracil ( ARG; HYX; URA) was characterised.IT201
