South Africa is passing through a phase of transition and children living in the country are still subject to many social and financial problems. They face high levels of social adversity, socio-economic deprivation, migration, displacement and morbidity. Rural South African children’s right to education and physical and mental health remains unfulfilled because of exposure to on-going adversity including poverty, family disruption through labour migration, malnutrition, inter-personal violence, chronic illness and death of family members due to HIV/AIDS.
