This paper contributes to the debate on international competitiveness in Colombia through a proposal that covers the economy as a whole, but that especially focuses on the Colombian manufacturing sector (as a generator of added value) and the economic environment in which they are immersed. Although, the competitiveness that firms achieve depends to a large extent on their own efforts, it is argued that macroeconomic, sectoral and institutional factors are one of the main determinants of productivity reached by firms, the added value they generate and the competitive enclave achieved in both the national and international markets.
