International audienceThis short overview unveils an evolution in the choice of hilltop settlements in the Cevennes and the Garrigues of eastern Languedoc between the late Bronze Age IIIaand the end of the first Iron Age.During the late Bronze Age IIIa, the perched habitat only concerns terraces that are suspended halfway up from scabrous sites. During the late Bronze Age IIIb, settlementsare easier to access and allow the use of larger areas: terraces, but in less abrupt terrains, plateau edges, more or less steep rocky promontories or isolated hills.If the choice of naturally fortified places is obvious, a structure shared by the inhabitants can complete the natural limits to close this space.
