This paper first describes the accreditation instrument currently used by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP), then considers some aspects of the future relationship between this professional body and Library and Information Science (LIS) education and training in the UK. A convergence of interests between CILIP and the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for Higher Education is discussed, notably with reference to subject benchmarking and the need to expand the traditional boundaries of LIS in order to encompass the interests of the archives, records management and museum communities.
