This article is offering thoughts about the professional identity of people working in the field of psychic care, starting from a doctoral research. In that research, we are wondering ourselves about the effects on identity of such a vocation and its potential risks. We met some clinicians who experienced some paradoxical feelings, being optimistic and focused on resources in their professional lives, but distrustful and worried in their private lives. Our hypothesis is that this dynamic—necessary but painful—offers advantages for the clinician’s professional identity, strengthening the sense of competence and maintaining the illusion of stable identity, but at the cost of an often unconscious “zone shift” towards the private sphere.SCOPUS:...
