AN INVESTIGATION ON THE FACTORS AFFECTING JOB SATISFACTION AT STIMA SACCO SOCIETY, KISUMU

The purpose of the study is to determine the factors influencing employee job satisfaction at Stima Sacco. The specific objectives of the study were: to determine the effect of working environment on job satisfaction, to examine the effect of salary on job satisfaction, to find out the effect of work load on job satisfaction and to investigate the effect of stress on job satisfaction. The findings of this study will be significant to the managers especially in Stima Sacco and will assist them understand employee behavior better. The findings will also assist the leaders in any other organization at large that face the dilemma of understanding how to satisfy their employees. The findings of this study will also be beneficial to scholars in a way that this will be a contribution to the body of knowledge in this broad and yet not fully exploited area of human resource management as well as social sciences. This will enhance understanding and development of relevant theories as well as extensive areas of interest. The study was conducted through case study research design targeting a population of 46 employees from the Sacco. Census was used to arrive at 46 as the desired representation of the employees. Secondary data was collected through review of past literature from books, publications, journals and internet. Primary data was collected through the use of questionnaires by hand delivery. Raw data was sorted, edited, validated and coded, cleared and entered to detect any missing values. Data was analyzed by use of descriptive statistical tools of analysis, by use of frequencies and percentages and presented by use of tables, pie charts and bar graphs. From the finding, the respondents agreed that they gain personal growth by learning various skills at the work place though they feel like they aren’t rewarded commensurate with the quality of their efforts. Majority admitted too that the job has brought positive changes to them. Majority of the employees are neither satisfied with their current salary nor the benefit packages they receive from the organization. They however admitted that there are opportunities for career advancement in the company. Majority of the respondents are satisfied with the information given by the management on what is going on in their division. They admitted too that company does an excellent job in keeping employees informed about matters affecting the employees. They however weren’t satisfied with their involvement in decisions that affect their work. Most of the respondents are self-motivated, well trained and enjoy their work; most also receive the respect they deserve from their colleagues. In recommendation, a good workplace is checked by such characteristics as competitive wages, trusting relationship between the employees and management, equity and fairness for everyone, and a sensible work load with challenging yet achievable goals. The management needs to develop policies to better these as a composite of all these conditions makes the work station the best possible working conditions for employees to work with high level of satisfaction. Further, people expect that if they work well in the workplace then their performance will increase and automatically their pay will increase and they will be promoted. The organization needs to look into its pay structure as well as benefit packages as this will cause increase in employee job satisfaction level. Lastly, Stress is the big issue of the organization which occurs due to tension work overload among other factors. The organization needs to put in place effective pay plans, fix day to day plans; these things reduce the employee stress and ultimately increased the employee job satisfaction.
