This thesis asks whether the Gothic is still useful as a transgressive mode of representation in Australian women’s historical fiction. The exegesis shows where the Gothic succeeds, where it fails, and how it can do more, while the novel is anti-Gothic, setting up the Gothic in order to dismantle it
