Abstract: Water balance and vegetation of the Moosfenn have been observed since the beginning of the 20th century. The Moosfenn, covering 3,67 ha, is one of the largest swimming kettle hole mires in the northeast of Germany. We describe genesis and water balance. Reconstruction of the genesis is based on existing pollen analyses and stratigraphic investigations. Remarkable is a long reed phase since the younger atlantikum. A drought with tree expansion followed at the beginning of the older subatlantikum. At the beginning of the later middle age a flooding to a level of 1,5 m above surface was detected.
