Abstract: Pond-like ditches are species-rich habitats for aquatic and semi-aquatic plants and animals. In such ditches in the Naturpark Drömling (Saxony-Anhalt) we found 201 species of macroinvertebrates and 149 species of macrophytes. According to the German Red List, there are 29 endagered species amongst them. For further 19 species, endangerment is supposed. This amount of Red List species emphasizes the supraregional importance of these water bodies. The physical and chemical status of the ditches depends on the intensity of the grazing cattle in the surroundings. Temporary grazing improves the ecological conditions by diversification.
