200 years of mire research in Greifswald – An overview and outlook

Abstract: For 200 years’ peatland studies have been done in Greifswald in Mecklenburg Western Pomerania (Germany). This article describes the development of peatland studies in Greifswald based on the chronology of important actors, their achievements and publications since the early 19th century. Peatland studies developed as a transdisciplinary discipline in science mainly conducted by botanists and geologists. Special emphasis is on the preparation of the concept of „vegetation forms“, the classification of hydrogenetic mire types, the quantitative palynology and the concept of paludiculture by scientists in Greifswald. The development of peatland studies in Greifswald is closely linked with the history of the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University in Greifswald. However new structures and institutions developed and were taken into account, for instance the Greifswald Mire Centre.Zusammenfassung: Greifswald in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ist seit etwa 200 Jahren ein Ort der moor kundlichen Forschung. Die Entwicklung der Moorforschung in Greifswald wird nachvollzogen in einer chronologisch aufgebauten Betrachtung des Wirkens wichtiger Vertreter und ihrer Arbeiten, beginnend mit dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert. Die Einordnung ihres Schaffens erfolgt vor dem Hintergrund der Entwicklung der Moorkunde als fachübergreifende, häufig von Botanikern und Geologen betriebene Wissenschaft. Hervorzuheben ist die Konzeptionierung und Erarbeitung des Vegetationsformenkonzeptes, der hydrogenetischen Moorklassifikation, der quantitativen Palynologie sowie der Paludikultur durch Greifswalder Forscher. Die Entwicklung der Moorkunde in Greifswald ist zwar eng mit der Geschichte der hiesigen Universität verzahnt, jedoch werden auch sich neu formende, darüberhinausgehende Strukturen, wie An-Institute, Stiftungen und das Greifswald Moor Centrum berücksichtigt.DFG, SUB Göttingen, DGMTresearc
