The main concern of Nancy’s work is to put forward a new ontology, a new first philosophy, that could serve as an alternative to metaphysical ontologies. This ontology, which concerns nothing more, but also nothing less than the bare existence of bodies beside each other, finds its condition of possibility in the sense of touch. It is because bodies touch that they are, and also are always together. On several occasions Nancy suggests that the exemplary touching is that of poetry. Having given a more general outline of the ontology put forward by Nancy and its connection with the sense of touch, I raise the question as to why this touch could be understood as poetic.
