The comparative study of the textures of the three calcium-sulfate-hemihydrates (α, α low pressure and β), by optical microscopy observation on thin layers, allows us to consider that liquid water is the recrystallisation medium of the hemihydrate during dehydration of gypsum. Diffractometer patterns of these three varieties differ in the intensity of the lines. According to the texture of the original gypsum, the α variety crystallizes either in thin needles or in large elongated crystals having their axis parallel to the (010) planes containing the water molecules of the dihydrate.
