The crystal structure of ytterbium Yb₃S₄ has been investigated by the single crystal X-ray diffraction method. This coumpound, containing both divalent and trivalent ytterbium ions, crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group ~Pnma. The cell unit dimensions are a = 12.71 Å, b = 3.60 Å, c = 12.88 Å, and contains four formul units. The structure is layered perpendicularly to the short axis b, and all atoms lie on mirror planes y = 1/4 and y = 3/4. The least squares refinement, based on the 487 observed structure factors, of the x and z positional parameters, anisotropic temperature factors, and site occupation factors for metallic ions, gives a final R of 0.093.
