Transition metals chalcogenides (X = S, Se or Te) are typical non-stoichiometric compounds and their structure is generaly related to the NiAs (B8) type. At room temperature, cations and vacancies tend to be ordered in octahedral sites. The effect of this ordering on physical properties leads us then to consider vacancies as a supplementary component. A classification of structures known to-day is based on the facts that vacancies are located in every second metal layer along the c axis and that vacancies and cations are ordered in every partial vacant layer. The diagrammatic representations thus derived for simple compositions M₅X₈, M₂X₃, M₃X₄, M₅X₆ and M₇X₈ are used as guides in structure studies and allow us to predict the existence of ...
