Botanique et paysage. Les haies d'une commune du Berry (Sagonne)

Botanical surveys undertaken in Great Britain have in certain cases established that a link can exist between the number of botanical species in a specific section of a hedge and the age of the hedge. This study attempts to adapt the method to a parish in Berry, Sagonne (Cher), whose characteristic is the existence of an area of open fields and an area of woodland. The choice of this ground was dictated by the presence of written documents which are relatively old, and especially a land plan dated 1704. The botanical study of 78 hedges, each 30 meters long enables us to ascertain that certain species of hedges or creeping plants prove by their presence to day the proximity of a wooded area at times now non-existent, which can thus be situated as it was at the time. As things stand with the modification of the method and its testing on the soil, it is possible to claim that the large quantity of plant species other than herbaceous — shrubs, aborescent and creepers — witness an unquestionable age of the hedge. The hedges that hold less than nine different types can be dated to the first half of the xvmth century, while all those that contain more than nine types are prior to the xvmth century, though it is not possible to be more precise in this estimation. The use of complementary methods, such as thermography or toponymy, make it possible to back up these methods of dating which now will have to be tested on other grounds with a resulting complementary analysis of the methodology. But from now on, due to these methods, it is possible to use the dating system for woodland in France, which should have the effect of calling attention to the consequences of hedge destruction a major result of the re-allocation of land.Des relevés botaniques effectués en Grande-Bretagne ont montré que dans certains cas une corrélation pouvait exister entre le nombre d'espèces botaniques vivantes dans une section déterminée de haie et l'âge de celle-ci. Cette étude tente d'adapter cette méthode à une commune du Berry, Sagonne (Cher), caractérisée par la présence d'un secteur en champs ouverts et d'un secteur en bocage. Le choix de ce terroir a été guidé par l'existence d'une documentation écrite relativement ancienne et notamment d'un plan terrier de 1704. L'étude botanique de 78 haies, sur 30 mètres de longueur chacune, permet d'abord de constater que certaines espèces arbustives ou lianescentes témoignent, par leur présence actuelle, de la proximité d'un secteur boisé parfois disparu, mais dont la localisation ancienne peut ainsi être restituée. Dans l'état actuel d'adaptation de la méthode et de vérification de celle-ci dans ce terroir, il est par ailleurs possible de dire qu'un nombre élevé d'espèces végétales autres qu'herbacées — arbustives, arborescentes et lianescentes — est le témoignage d'une certaine ancienneté de la haie. Les haies possédant moins de neuf espèces différentes sont postérieures au milieu du XVIIIe siècle, tandis que toutes celles qui montrent plus de neuf espèces sont antérieures au XVIIIe siècle, sans qu'il soit possible d'affiner plus précisément cette estimation. Le recours à des méthodes de prospection complémentaires, comme la thermographie ou la toponymie, permet d'étayer ces méthodes de datation, qui devront être testées sur d'autres terroirs et faire l'objet d'une réflexion méthodologique complémentaire. Mais dès maintenant, grâce à elles, des possibilités de datation existent pour le bocage français, ce qui doit attirer l'attention sur les conséquences de la destruction des haies, résultant notamment du remembrement.Fourteau Anne-Marie.
