Although the funerary rites of the Merovingian era are often though to be well-known today, the question of the removal of skulls remains problematical. Numerous examples have been recorded in the East of France, both in the case of old digs as well as in digs more recently worked. Although it is not possible to advance the hypothesis of decapitation, it is nonetheless possible to speak of a real ritual removal of the skull, this appearing either in the absence of the skull or in the skull's unusual position, when the skull hasn't simply been buried separately.
