Un village médiéval breton du XIe siècle : Lann-Gouh Melrand (Morbihan)

Patrick André, A Breton mediaeval village of the 11th century : Lann-Gouh Melrand (Morbihan ). The resumption of digs carried out to a limited extent only at the beginning of the century in an abandoned village in central Brittany has brought to the light of day, after four years of research, a 9th century habitat. A number of constructions remain from an enclosed villaged located high over the ground, a village where poor peasants made their living from breeding animals on a modest scale and raising cereals over a small area. Occasionally of a mixed style, the houses have open hearths and include the ceramicware generally found at mediaeval Breton sites. The study of this village, which the author does not pretend represented the typical Breton habitat of the 11th century, is to be seen in the context of current research on mediaeval villages and country houses in those areas of sparsely settled habitat.La reprise d'une fouille partielle faite au début du siècle sur un village abandonné de la Bretagne intérieure a révélé, au terme de quatre années de recherches, un habitat du XIe siècle. Une dizaine de constructions subsistent d'un village perché et clos, où une paysannerie pauvre vivait d'un élevage modeste associé à des cultures céréalières peu étendues. Parfois mixtes, les maisons présentent un foyer ouvert et offrent le mobilier céramique habituel des sites médiévaux bretons. L'étude de ce village, dont l'auteur ne prétend pas qu'il reflète de façon exemplaire l'habitat rural breton du XIe siècle, s'inscrit dans le cadre des recherches en cours sur le village médiéval et la maison rurale de ces régions d'habitat dispersé.André Patrick.
