The local order around germanium is studied by EXAFS, in glasses belonging to the system Na2O-GeO2-B2O3-SiO2, and compared to that in glasses belonging to the simpler systems GeO2, GeO2-SiO2 and GeO2-Na2O. In vitreous GeO2 and glasses belonging to the system GeO2-SiO2, the derived Ge-O distance is characteristic for the GeO4 tetrahedron. A larger Ge-O distance was observed for glasses in the system GeO2-Na2O, indicating that some of the Ge atoms are octahedrally coordinated. Second nearest neighbours have been only observed for the vitreous systems GeO2 and GeO2-Na2O.
