At least four general methods exist for determining both the absorptive (k) and dispersive (n) optical constants of anisotropic crystals. These are the familiar «two media » method, the Kramers-Kronig analysis of reflectance at normal incidence, and the measurement of R, at two or more angles of incidence which may be either above or below the critical angle for total internal reflexion. In addition to the general methods, there is a large number of special methods applicable to isotropic materials. The most useful of these are ellipsometry and methods D and H of Humphreys-Owen (1961).
