Lanthanite (La, Ce)2 (CO3)3 • 8H2O was observed in a silty and arenaceous clay, likely deposited under semi-arid conditions in the Guabirotuba formation of the Curitiba basin, Paraná, Brazil. Orthorhombic with a = 9.476 ; b = 16.940 and c = 8.942 Å, this mineral contains the following rare earths : Nd2O3 = 21.84 % ; La2O3 = 19,44 ; Pr2O3 = 5. 18 ; Sm2O3 = 4.10 ; Gd2O3 = 1.69 ; Eu2O3 = 1.64 ; Dy2O3 = 0.44 ; Y2O3 = 0.22 and Ce2O3 = 0.03. Very poor in cerium and richer in neodynium than in lanthanum this mineral is the richest in europium so far encountered.
