The role of representations in the development of communicative ability. In this paper I analyze the relationship between the theories of communication and the theories of development. My startpoint is that the theories of communication deal with adult communication and ignore the development of communicative ability in children. On the other hand cognitive psychologists use the theories of pragmatics formulated by the philosophers of language without criticizing them. I maintain here that the relationship between theories of communication and theories of development has to be reversed.
