This paper presents a discussion of recent research on how pragmatic knowledge (i.e. knowledge of the content of arguments) affects reasoning. After a brief review of some empirical findings of content effect in the area of conditional reasoning, the complex pattern of content effects observed on a meta-inferential task (Wason's selection task) is considered. A recent approach (the pragmatic schémas theory) which deals with the specific performances obtained when this task concerns social rules (particularly deontic ones), is presented and subsequently compared to some alternative approaches.
