58 samples of proustite and pyrargyrite from different deposits have been studied to determine relationship between optical properties in reflected light and chemical composition obtained from electron microprobe analysis. For each natural sample, reflectance and refractive indices have been measured in the range of the visible spectrum. Comparison of these results with measurements on synthetic samples shows discrepancies between terms with the same degree of substitution. The comparison was made easier using colour parameters among which luminance was found, in this case, the more convenient. Luminance and deposit types of pyrargyrite seem to be linked.
