Uniaxial compression of kyanite single crystals has been performed in the temperature range (20, 600° C). The stress-strain curves exhibit a surprisingly low elastic limit (< 80 bars) and no work hardening, furthermore, instabilities appear at high temperature. Dislocation substructures left by the deformation are observed by X ray topography (Berg-Barrett method) and by transmission electron microscopy. The dislocation density is low (- 107 cm-2), there are no twins. The observed instabilities on the stress-strain curves are interpreted by a mechanism of creation and annihilation of the Frank-Read sources. This mechanism is a special one in the case of kyanite which probably possesses only one glide system. Thus, it seems that no reliable ...
