During the colonial period, and in particular beginning with the conquest of Algeria, the perception of tropical forests was impregnated with preconceptions derived from the observer's own culture as well as economic doctrines of the epoch which served as the basis for constructing a colonial ideology. The dominant vision of the world in France shaped and in a sense pre-determined the outlook on tropical environments. Initially, the conquerors faced a Mediterranean environment that was familiar because it was linked to their own cultural origins.
