The Karaisali reef of Lower-Middle Miocene age (Karaisali Formation) can be subdivided morphologically into reef -framework, reef-front, and inter-reef depression. The reef-framework is characte¬ rized mainly by two intricately intermingling subfacies, namely coralgal packstone-boundstone and small benthic foraminiferal-algal packstone. The former is essentially a massive reef-core limestone, representing a welded growth structure of corals and coralline red algae in which detritus of the same organisms and of others (e.g., foraminifera, echinodeims, and molluscs) occurs in discrete pockets, whereas the latter is a well-bedded and poorly-sorted miliolid limes-lone, representing deposition in the protected areas of the reef-frame-work.
