The purpose of this paper is to investigate the Chinese industrial growth process from 1983 to 1992 at a regional level. It seeks to quantify the role of the open-door policy in regional development paths. It also seeks to provide some explanation of the dynamics of regional differences. The econometric analysis uses a panel database of 19 Chinese provinces over the period 1983-1992. The results highlight the importance of open-door policy as a main engine in provincial industrial growth and tend to confirm the strong contribution of foreign investment in the Chinese growth process. They also identify a phenomenon of inter-regional propagation of growth which reinforces the dynamism in coastal provinces and contributes to an overall dynami...
