Art and the Alphabet in the Times of the Dipylon Master

In this article I propose that the introduction of the alphabet to post-Dark Age Greece, in the first years of the 8th c. BCE, led within a generation to an explosion of figurative representations in vase painting and contributed to the inception of narrative techniques that stayed with Greek art ever since. Specifically, it is suggested that the Dipylon Master may have had some knowledge of writing and that his experience with letters had repercussions in his work as a painter. The outlines of and relationship between letters in a written word must have offered him and other late Geometric artists a stimulus for pursuing these implications in the world of painting.L’art et l’alphabet à l’époque du Maître du Dipylon Dans cet article nous souhaitons montrer que l’introduction de l’alphabet en Grèce après le hiatus des siècles obscurs, au début du VIIIe siècle av. J.-C., a eu comme résultat, dans les délais d’une seule génération, une prolifération des representations figuratives dans la peinture sur vases, et a contribué au lancement des techniques narratives qui allaient finir par caractériser l’art grecque. Plus spécifiquement, il est suggéré que le Maître du Dipylon jouissait d’une certaine maîtrise de l’écriture et que ses expériences avec les lettres ont influencé son oeuvre artistique. Les contours des lettres et les relations entre elles dans le mot écrit ont certainement donné aux peintres de la période géométrique tardive l’impulsion de poursuivre ces implications dans le monde de la peinture.Pavel Catalin.
