The magnetic properties of rocks essentially depend on the combined effects of concentration, chemism and sizes of their magnetic minerals ; now, when maghemitization proceeds, these effects are interdependent, since maghemitization systematically produces a grain size and eventually a concentration decrease of the titanomagnetites. The discrepancies between results, commonly found in previous works, originate in part from the fact that the observed effects in reality are the resultant of the variations in these three parameters. The present work attempts to demonstrate the effects of maghemitization on the magnetic properties of cretaceous basalts, independently of the concentration and the size of their titanomagnetites. The samples are s...
