1. Two rations containing 16 and 22 per cent of protein respectively were fed to newly hatched chicks in two series of feeding trials. In one series the lower protein level was secured by diluting the higher with 30 parts of starch so that the amount but not the quality of the protein was changed. In the other series the amount and quality of the protein both varied since the two rations were mixed by using different proportions of the base and concentrate to yield the 16 and 22 per cent levels in the finished rations. 2.
