The Effect of Various Fertilizer Treatments with and without Inoculation on the Revegetation of Ida Silt Loam Subsoil

The major objective of this experiment was to determine the effects of various fertilizer combinations with and without inoculation on the yield and cover of an alfalfa-bromegrass mixture. The effect of various fertilizer combinations with and without inoculation on N fixation and on some of the physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil was also determined in this experiment. A field study was made in western Iowa involving the establishment of alfalfa-bromegrass on Ida silt loam subsoil areas. Twelve fertilizer treatments, including various rates and combinations of N and P, with and without inoculation, were used in this experiment. These fertilizers were applied and worked into the soil previous to seeding the alfalfa and bromegrass mixture. The alfalfa bromegrass mixture was seeded at the rate of 20 lbs. of bromegrass and 8 lbs. of alfalfa per acre. Each of the treatments was split for inoculation. Advisor: T. M. McCalla
