The purpose of this qualitative collective case study was to describe how three high-level career administrators in Nebraska state government understand the practice of leadership in a managerial role. The following questions guided the study: (1) How do the administrators: (a) set direction, (b) motivate employees, and (c) describe relationships internal and external to the organization? (2) What challenges to leading do the administrators identify? (3) What preparation for leadership do the three administrators describe?
