Ursprünglich wurde die Inhalationstherapie zur Behandlung von Lungenerkrankungen eingesetzt, um niedrige Arzneistoffkonzentrationen an den Wirkort zu transportieren. Durch die Entwicklung neuer Systeme, wie zum Beispiel Trockenpulverinhalatoren (DPIs), ist es heute möglich auch höhere Wirkstoffdosen in die Lunge zu transportieren, um lokale oder systemische therapeutische Effekte erreichen zu können. DPIs haben weiters den Vorteil, dass sie einfacher in der Handhabung und Verabreichung, und somit patientenfreundlicher sind. Ebenso beeinflussen sie positiv die Produktstabilität.
