International audienceFrom 1777 onward, Trinidad became a unique case in the Spanish Empire, as a slave society and a multinational island. Exposed to the revolutionary winds of 1789, it was the site of a remarkable politicization, in particular among slaves and “free colored” people who acted under the banner of the republican ideas.
