Is there an Italian side to Mary Caponegro\u2019s fiction? What are its coordinates, its raison d\u2019\ueatre, its phenomenology? This contribution tries to critically map the ideological and formal emergence of an Italian Caponegro (from The Star Caf\ue9 to Five Doubts and The Complexities of Intimacy, and beyond), shedding light on the context as well as on the textual. With the suspect that there might be a profound element in the recurring Italian signs of Caponegro\u2019s art, one which somehow conflates ethnic self-awareness and experimental search into the roots of the creative process
