Boron is a fundamental resource for the modern society, as confirmed by the doubling in the world production of ore minerals during the last decade (US Geological Survey, 2007, 2017). The applications of boron in the ceramic industry mainly concerns the production of: i) super-hard light ceramics (e.g., B4C), ii) ultra-high temperature ceramics for extreme refractories applications, and iii) composite materials for the shielding of neutron radiation, due to the large absorption capacity of 10B (Carter et al., 1953).
