In this essay, I discuss the place for religious symbols (RS) in public space. Section 2 is devoted to elucidate the distinction between RS placed by the State and RS weared by individuals. Section 3 examines the crucifix case, arguing that religious neutrality suggests to deny that RS should be displayed in the institutional space. Section 4 I analyzes the affaire du foulard, sustaining that religious freedom recommends to permit to the individuals wearing RS
