Regeneration of skeletal muscle is a complex process that requires the activation of quiescent adult stem cells, the satellite cells, which are resident in hypoxic niches in the tissue. This process is mainly regulated through a group of transcription factors known as the hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs).
