Direct observations of a wide variety of natural habitats have established that 99% of microorganisms grow in form of biofilms, complex structured communities of microorganisms associated with surfaces and embedded in a self-produced extracellular polymeric substances. Biofilms are able to colonize every surface that offers minimal conditions for the life included all human artefact surfaces. Consequently, industrial installations, work benches, water distribution systems and also medical devices can be covered by biofilm with devastating consequences in terms of social and economic impact.
