The Cancer Stem Cell model supported the notion that leukemia was initiated and maintained in vivo by a small fraction of leukemia-initiating cells (LICs). Previous studies have suggested the involvement of Wnt signaling pathway in Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) by the ability to sustain the development of LICs. A novel hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell marker, monoclonal antibody AC133, recognizes the CD34bright CD38- subset of human acute myeloid leukemia cells, suggesting that it may be an early marker for the LICs.
