Il gene EIF3E (eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 subunit e) \ue8 stato identificato inizialmente in topo come sito di integrazione del virus MMTV (mouse mammary tumor virus). Nel genoma umano EIF3E \ue8 un gene di 45 Kb localizzato nella porzione 22-23 del braccio lungo del cromosoma 8 e codifica per un RNA messaggero di 1516 nucleotidi e una proteina di 445 amminoacidi (52 KDa). L\u2019integrazione del virus MMTV negli introni (5, 9, 12) del gene EIF3E causa la trascrizione di RNA tronchi.
