Flexibility - which in many European countries has been introduced or enhanced through the liberalization of non-standard contracts - does not necessarily imply work insecurity. By looking at a monetary measure of what one gets from the labor market and the social protection system in the medium run, we offer a new assessment of job precariousness in Italy. In particular, we find that: i) many non-standard workers are not insecure; ii) work insecurity also involves a non-negligible share of standard workers; iii) this notwithstanding, the risk of work insecurity for non-standard workers is significantly larger than for standard ones
